Chile has confirmed 41 hantavirus cases and 14 deaths as of May 9, 2026, with a high case fatality rate of 34%. Two recent cases were reported in Ñuble (a 35-year-old man) and Los Lagos (a 47-year-old livestock worker from Purranque) regions in late May. The Andes virus, transmitted by the long-tailed mouse, is endemic in Chile, particularly in humid forest areas.
