cidrap.umn.edu · 2026-05-01
At least eight passengers, including three who died, were sickened in a hantavirus outbreak aboard a Dutch cruise ship. A patient who had been on the ship and subsequently became ill in Switzerland is now hospitalized with confirmed Andes hantavirus. The ship, MV Hondius, moved from Cabo Verde to the Canary Islands. The Andes strain is the only hantavirus strain known to have documented person-to-person transmission, though it is considered rare and usually linked to close contact.
