CIDRAP reported on May 6, 2026, that at least eight passengers, including three deaths, were sickened in a hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius. Three ill passengers were airlifted to the Netherlands for medical care. A patient who disembarked in late April and returned to Switzerland is now hospitalized with confirmed Andes hantavirus. The WHO stated that the risk to the general population is very low. The ship was moving from Cabo Verde to the Canary Islands.
